The Good, The Bad and The Scheibs... ep.2
Ventured out to Hibiscus to see what I thought was going to be an entertaining match between SWM
and the Mountainmen from Toowoomba. First things first, the first Corona had a lime, so I was happy,
Corona number 2 was lime less thou. Also I know you’re running the place now and need to make a
profit Rob T, but can we get some burgers or Sangers at the canteen. I got to add at ten bucks to get in,
7 bucks a beer and 11 dollars for some over cooked chicken and rice, it’s an expensive night out. If
that’s what’s on offer, next time I’ll finish fishing earlier and eat before I come. As usual the folk out at
SWM are one of the nicest most accommodating crew in the QBL, loving the Dionysius family becoming
more involved too.
What I and everyone else got was basically an SBL game. Sure we got to see Jarred Bairstow and
Brendan Teys who is coming off ankle surgery and pre game he warned me he was going to be a bit
rusty, he wasn’t lying, he aint shooting oh for again is my guess!! Returning import Maxey and the latest
in the Bellarmine connection joining last year’s MVP Kendle and stud Braydon Hobbs, Chris Whitehead
warmed up and all looked set for a nice competitive game. They looked good in warmups and sadly
that’s all we got to see of this pair, why is that you ask? I have been very reliably informed that all the
paper work for the TBar imports were in to FIBA and BA. But sadly it was late on a Friday and it never got
done, despite assurances that it would. This stuff shouldn’t happen and all who attended should ask BA
to refund our money as this was not the game that was advertised. Toowoomba have lodged a protest,
however you know BQ aren’t and really can’t uphold it and replay the game, it’s for once not their fault.
One would hope at the very least, that the states governing body let those that stuffed up know that we
aint happy, Jan!
Oh yeah the game, it was not much of a spectacle. You know when Ryan Vines and Luke Pittle shoot the
three ball at 70%, there is not much D being played. Jarred Bairstow is a force and the Bullets should
take a look at this local product is my thoughts. Teysie as mentioned looked out of synch, and he
couldn’t buy a basket, but he’s a QBL MVP talent so he will settle in and when they get their imports
they should be around the mark in the South pool. TBar were enthusiastic, but besides C Dickerson, they
looked out manned and the final score showed that. Thou they have a new guy from Melbourne and he
can shoot it, but he’s coming back from a horrific foot injury and too many value meals at Maccas! I am
guessing even with their two imports it will be hard for Ants team to repeat last year’s magical run to
the final four.
We may have to start calling the Force IpswicheD, because there might just be some D in Ipswich after
all? Holding the Old Coast Rollers to 85 and erasing a 9 point three quarter time deficit to record an
opening home court victory might just be the catalyst for this side in 2016, or it might not. However one
thing is for sure this Southern pool will be very tight once everyone’s rosters are sorted out. Once again
imports Legan and Harvey led from the front. For the Rollers Thalo Green had a double double on his
return and good to see young’uns Tom and Salecich back in their junior club colours and having nice
opening games.
Well the rumble up the coast proved to be the one sided affair that I thought it would be! Rip were
getting ripped a new one and at three quarter time they were down 26, game was over at that point. I
guess Rip supporters could possibly look at the final quarter and get some comfort. Jorden Page and
Zane Meehl had triumphant return games on their old home court. Meehl getting 25pts off only 13
shots. Page going for 18 off a mere 10 shots. Thou my spies tell me the most impressive part of Jordies
return was the defensive job he did on Import Hurdle. Phoenix started in a zone and Hurdle got hot early
and it was then that the PClips went to M2M in the second and third quarters, with Page shutting down
Hurdle it was game over for the debutantes. Page would look good in a Bullets uniform and if this start is
anything to go by the kid has a shot. For the Rip Rory Sutton put up great numbers and he’ll need to
continue to do it if they want to compete each week. After a good first quarter import Hurdle went quiet
when the game was on the line, then got most of his in the final quarter when the fat lady had already
sung.
Logan up by 36, yes folks that’s 36 points at the half. That’s why Bundy get no love from me and you
have to ask where this club is headed? Second year of import head coach Daniels and he finds his
team down by 36 at HALF time in the season opener and you are not in Rocky or Mackay, that’s just
rubbish! Enough said on them, Logan looks to have all the pieces and the maestro is conducting the
orchestra, but I have to keep reminding myself it’s Logan. Import Baker had 17 points in 14 minutes and
never missed a shot! Mitchell Young celebrated his Bullets signing with a 22 point 15 rebound game in
only 22 minutes. Throw in Cedar and Ammar and this team has class and some depth. But then again
they did play you know who, and sadly this will not prepare them for their next game on Friday night
against Rocky in Rocky. We shall see quickly where they are as this game only showed how insipid Bundy
are, and showed very little about where Logan is as a team at this early stage.
Quickly having a look at the other results, Rocky didn’t take long to remind Gladstone who the top dog
of CQ is and that last year’s final game was an aberration. Rockets pants Gladstone and even the Powers
quality import Ray Willis who had to sit out because of the dreaded visa blunder, would not have
changed the outcome in this one sided affair.
Macktown losing to Cairns in their season opener at home is a surprise and a rarity. No one said
defending that title would be easy. Then Townsville knock off Cairns in the Heats home opener, this just
shows how tight the North pool will be. It really opens the door for a South team that gets to play
Bundy and Rip 4 times a rare chance to achieve the league’s best overall record and host this years GF.
